English language, international mentality, Italian cultural roots, and aptitude for project-based learning: ICS International School's objective is to shape modern citizens able to succeed in an ever wider and rapidly changing world, where finding simple solutions to increasingly complex problems is essential. The teaching of maths and English follows the British curriculum and is certified by Cambridge International Examinations.
The programmes of study are delivered in an English context, with native-speaking teachers. For the Primary School, the teachers are supported by Italian teachers. Our curriculum adheres to the national requirements for the Kindergarten curriculum and the first educational cycle issued by MIUR, specifically for the Italian language, history and culture programme. As of the 2016-2017 academic year our school is an officially recognised school.
For children from 6 months to 5 years of age the educational structure complements the principles of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), which is a programme of study designed especially for pre-school children to promote their personal, social and emotional development. The curriculum also adheres to high international standards that prepare students for a rapidly changing world thanks to an innovative, comprehensive cross-curricular programme that delivers all the foundation subjects - the IPC, International Primary Curriculum, for children from ages 5 to 11.
At the end of Primary School, students can continue their learning journey with the Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate (MYP) to work towards the IB Diploma Programme in the final two years of high school. The IB Diploma is equivalent to the Italian maturità but taken one year earlier, and allows students to apply to all Italian and international universities.
Alongside these international programmes the distinctive feature of the curriculum that we offer comes from the Design Process, whose objective is to develop students' problem-solving skills and their ability to think laterally, whilst nurturing talent and creativity.
EYFS Early Years Foundation Stage Framework
From 6 months to 5 years.
The EYFS framework is based on 4 underpinning principles:
• Unique Child
Every child is seen as a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured;
• Enabling Environments
The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning;
• Positive Relationships
Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and /or a Key Person;
• Learning and Development
Children learn and develop in different ways and at different rates and all areas of learning and development are equally important and interconnected.
The learning activities are all delivered in English by native-speaking teachers, supported in some activities in Italian by native-speaking teachers.
IPC International Primary Curriculum
From 5 to 11 years.
Corresponds to the final year of kindergarten and the 5 years of Italian primary school (elementare). The learning activities and lessons are all delivered in English by native-speaking teachers. Italian language, history and culture are all taught by Italian teachers for a total of 8 out of 35 hours a week
International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme
From 11 to 16 years.
A five-year programme that corresponds to the three years of Italian Middle School (media) and the first two years of High School (scuola secondaria di secondo grado). The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP curriculum comprises eight subject groups and provides a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
From 16 to 18 years.
The final two-year High School programme, which allows access to the most important Italian and international universities. The rigorous programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge - students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. The IBDP curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and a required extended essay.
