At ICS International School we understand that the quality of the experiences children have in their early years is fundamental in terms of developing their own talents, and that in order to prepare them for the future we need to allow them time and space in the present. This is why we place such importance on the nursery as a space for first experiences, where adults support children on a journey of discovery about the world that feeds their interest, their pleasure and their wish to participate.
The educational structure complements the principles of the UK Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS), which is a programme for children aged 0-5 years set up by the British Education Ministry and widely used in many international schools, as well as Italian teaching culture. It recognises the value of the following elements:
- Individuality, where the child is seen as a competent individual who is constantly learning
- Positive relationships, as a basis for building positive self-image and independence
- An environment suited to support children in their development and learning
- Development and learning that respect each child's individual timings and methods.
Our nursery teachers place particular importance on personal, social and emotional development, language and communication, and motor skill development as the fundamental pillars of future learning. We understand how extraordinarily receptive children are and we offer sensory experiences using everyday materials (sand, different types of flour, mixtures, spices…) as well as unusual yet simple tools, suited to inspiring their interest and enhancing their creativity, satisfying their curiosity for the world around them, and developing important abilities like fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
English is used every day to support children's emotional, cognitive and physical development, but without any formal teaching, in order to encourage their curiosity, ability and attitude towards a different language from their own.
At ICS International School we take time to listen to, communicate with and get to know parents. The growth and well-being of the children is our focus and we want to establish a collaborative, reciprocal relationship in order to build an educational partnership between teachers and parents.
