Approaches to learning


Approaches to Learning focuses on learning how to learn and developing transdisciplinary skills that empower students to be successful at school, in their further education and in their professional lives. Approaches to Learning includes skills such as:

  • communication skills,
  • social skills,
  • thinking skills,
  • research skills,
  • self-management skills.


Learning in the Middle School aims to help our students to understand the complex world they live in. Our programme identifies six areas of inquiry which provide contexts for the students’ learning and enable them to make meaningful connections between their studies and the world at large. All classroom learning is approached through the lens of one of six global contexts which serve as points of reference when planning units of inquiry for our Middle School students.

  1. identities and relationships,
  2. personal and cultural identity,
  3. orientation in space and time,
  4. scientific and technical innovation,
  5. fairness and development,
  6. globalization and sustainability.

The use of global concepts as a point of reference allows our teachers to ensure that their lessons are relevant, meaningful and motivating and relate to the world at large.


Action and service are key components of the Middle School Programme. Middle School students are encouraged to apply what they learn both in the classroom and beyond. They are supported to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service with the aim of making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.
