ICS international School started this year a collaboration with IFOM, the Institute of Molecular Oncology founded by the Italian Foundation for cancer research.
Thanks to this project, middle school students regularly attend science classes in a real laboratory and meet with international scientists. This gives students the opportunity to explore fundaments of science in a real-life setting.
IFOM is a cutting-edge leader institute with a clear mission: understanding cancer in order to cure it. Researchers from all around the world collaborate to unravel molecular mechanisms underlying cancer formation and development, approaching the problem from different perspectives.
How do middle school students fit into all of this? Since its establishment, IFOM decided to open the doors of its labs to students, inviting them to explore how molecular biology works, what's behind cancer research and what we can expect from it.
IFOM’s Science & Society program called YouScientist, which was launched 15 years ago, has so far involved more than 30,000 people in several science educational activities. Thanks to the experience of YouScientist, IFOM set up a scientific program which could meet the criteria required by the Italian Ministry of Education and at the same time focus on discovering rather than learning by heart and repeating content.
Researchers in IFOM are life-long learners, risk takers, curious and collaborative. Thus, providing students with the setting to learn by doing, this project fits perfectly with the fundamental beliefs of the IB program and sustains the shaping of great minds.
